Mariano Rivera Most Likely to Retire

Major League baseball is set to lose one of its living legends at the end of this year, as Mariano Rivera has been said to be preparing an announcement regarding plans to retire after the 2013 season finishes. Although there has been no official announcement yet, a news conference has been called for Saturday, and it is expected that Rivera will make the announcement then.

Rivera had a tough season last year, spending most of his time sitting out after he tore a ligament in his knee. Surgery was required for the injury, leaving Rivera on the sidelines for the majority of the season.

When Rivera retires, so will his number, as he is the last remaining player in the major leagues to wear the number 42. 42 was officially retired in 1997 for Jackie Robinson, but players who were already using the number were not required to give it up.

The news conference will be held on Saturday morning at the Yankees’ spring training facilities in Tampa, Florida, and spokespeople for the Yankees have declined to comment on the reports prior to the official announcement.

Derek Jeter will have surgery to repair broken ankle

Derek Jeter may have to sit out the beginning of the 2013 MLB season. The Yankees captain broke his ankle last week during the 12^th inning of the first gave of the American League Championship Series and will undergo surgery this coming weekend to repair the damage. Yankees officials originally estimated that Jeter would require about 3 months to recover but new estimates put recovery time closer to 5 months before he’ll be back in the game. According to a source close to Jeter, the Yankees star was already being treated for a stress fracture in his ankle that required cortisone shots before the final break on Saturday night. Don’t count Jeter out yet though, he still plans to be back in time for the start of the new season and the Yankees have said that they will not look for a replacement. The Yankees are in Detroit tonight without their captain and will have to win in order to avoid elimination; the Tigers are leading the series 3-0.

Green Monster Mascot Stolen from Boston Red Sox

If you happen to see a large green monster out and about today you may want to contact your local authorities. According to an official police report Wally the Green Monster has been stolen from the Boston Red Sox. Wally has been with the Sox since April of 1997 and is officially listed as living at Fenway Park. The call came in today around 2:30 in the afternoon as a larceny in progress at Boylston and Dartmouth Street. Wally was apparently home alone today as the Sox are in New York to play the Yankees tonight. Wally does not go to away games and only leaves Fenway for the occasional birthday party, charity event or parade.
