First Gold Medal for Women's Boxing goes to Claressa Shields

History gets made a lot during the Olympic games, new world records, underdogs beating incredible odds but this year will mark an even bigger event in Olympic history. 2012 is the first year that the Olympic games has hosted female boxing and while the men from the U.S. didn’t put up much of a fight a 17 year old girl from Flint, Michigan has made a special place for herself in Olympic history by becoming the first woman ever to win a gold medal in women’s boxing. Claressa Shields won the middleweight final today against Nadezda Torlopova of Russia 19-12. Both athletes stand 5’9 and proved that it would be a tough match right from the start but the 17 year old ultimatly came out on top to make Olympic history and to take home the only gold medal in boxing for the U.S. this year.
