The football world lost one of its greats today when Beano Cook, a football expert who has been with ESPN for 26 years, passed away at the age of 81. Cook began his football career back in 1956 where he acted as sports information director at his alma mater, the University of Pittsburgh. In 1966 Cook left the university to take a job at ABC Sports as a press director for the NCAA, a position he held until 1974. For the rest of the seventies and early eighties, Cook split his time between working as public relations director for the Miami Dolphins, writing sports articles for the St. Petersburg Times and working in public relations for CBS but where Cook really made his mark was in his 26 year long career as a college football expert and analyst with ESPN. Cook was known as much for his dry humor as he was for his extensive knowledge of all things football. Cook has been suffering health problems for several years leading up to his death including diabetes.
