Michael Phelps beat his own Olympic record today by becoming the first Olympic contender to win 20 Olympic medals and to win 16 gold medals. He took home gold today in the 200-meter individual medley making him the first man to win an individual event 3 Games in a row. Phelps beat out Ryan Lochte to take the gold in what was supposed to be one of the greatest rivalries of the 2012 summer Olympics. Lochte went into the games boasting that this would be the year that he bested Phelps but despite an impressive 11 medals in his career so far the sport seems to still be firmly in Phelps’ control. Phelps plans to retire after this Olympics but before then he has two more events lined up. he competes Friday in the 100 butterfly and again on Saturday in the 4 x 100 medley relay meaning he could end his career with an astounding 22 medals.
