The first female MLB umpire to work a regular-season game is finally here—and her name is Jen Pawol.

On August 9, 2025, Pawol stepped onto the field as the first-base umpire for the Braves vs. Marlins game in Miami, breaking a 148-year gender barrier in Major League Baseball history.

The historic weekend continued on August 10, when she became the first woman to call balls and strikes behind the plate in a regular-season game.

Under the high-pressure spotlight of her plate debut, Pawol delivered a 92.72% accuracy rate on 151 called pitches, just shy of the MLB league average of 94.23%.

Managers from both dugouts praised her calm demeanor, consistent strike zone, and professional control of the game.

From Art Teacher to the Big Leagues

Pawol’s path wasn’t easy or typical. A former art teacher, she began umpiring softball games in 1990, eventually moving into baseball umpiring in 2007.

She joined Minor League Baseball in 2016 and went on to work more than 1,200 games, including the Triple-A National Championship Game in 2023.

She first appeared in the majors in 2024 as a fill-in umpire before earning her full-time spot in 2025.

The Weekend That Changed Everything

Her debut wasn’t just about the games—it was about representation. Fans in Miami gave her a warm ovation on both nights, with many holding signs celebrating the milestone.

On the field, Pawol’s presence was confident, and her interactions with players were smooth and professional. The Braves won both games, but the real story was the woman in blue making history.

Why It Matters

The first female MLB umpire isn’t just a headline—it’s a turning point. Baseball has been notoriously slow to diversify its officiating crews, and Pawol’s breakthrough sends a clear message to women in sports everywhere: the path is still long, but the door is now open.

Beyond Baseball

While other sports have seen women officiate at the highest levels—the NFL, NBA, and FIFA Women’s World Cup—MLB was the last major American league to break this particular barrier.

Pawol’s debut puts her in the same conversation as pioneers like Sarah Thomas (NFL) and Violet Palmer (NBA).

For Pawol, it’s not about making history for history’s sake. In her own words after her debut:

“The dream actually came true today. I’m still living in it… I’m just so grateful… The work continues—every pitch, every game.”
